Robert Whiteside - Creature Maker

Goblins pocket background Initial_edited

I have been making models and creating creatures in one form or another all my life.

As a child I could generally be found by following the trail of plasticine crumbs. Over the subsequent years I have never lost the love of creating things, or managed to get my head out of the clouds despite what I was told.

I got older, the models and creatures slowly became more sophisticated and complex until I achieved what you will find on this site today. As a teenager my skill building creatures secured a position on an animation degree, and the hope was to create moving pictures with them. Life has a way of going its own route however, and I quickly realised animating was not for me. I was not interested in reproducing many multiples of the same model and moving them some 24 times for a second of film, (the degree was not a total loss - I have used it honestly).

The skills I learnt during those three years however were invaluable and are still visible in most aspects of my work today, in fact it deepened my inspiration and pushed my understanding of tools, materials and methods. It formed the foundations for subsequent years work where I have progressed to much more elaborate and demanding builds.

It was not until 2008 however (and only after it being emphatically pointed out) that there may be a market for my work. So I began to sell my creatures from a tent studio in a Birmingham back garden. Since then I have had bedrooms, lofts, Cornish sheds, Chinese high rises and a few others. Overall it took another 14 years for the Goblins Pocket to reach what you see here today.
