The idea for this project began a few years ago when I was living on a narrow boat on the canals around Birmingham. After encountering environment agency workers in the water, I learned of a proposed museum celebrating canal heritage that had been shelved due to heavy metal pollution. This sparked my interest in Mycoremediation—a method using fungi that would draw the heavy metals from the silt and water. To my surprise, despite its potential, this solution was not being implemented. Instead, the site was developed into upscale luxury housing. This project is a response to how community and environmental benefits are too often ignored in favour of profit. True power lies in knowledge and collective questioning. If enough of us realize that viable solutions like Mycoremediation exist and are being overlooked, we can challenge the status quo and push for real change. The world is full of examples like this where absurdity rules, usually at the expense of the environment and people with little power.

This project would not have been possible on my own. There have been schools, community groups, community companies, property companies, private companies, public bodies, members of the public and many other individuals who have made it possible. I am incredibly grateful for the invaluable support from the wide range of contributors and community members who have been involved.

Below are direct links to various collaborators of the project so check them out and see what they are up to!

Further Information

I am not a scientist, and as such, feel I am not the best person to guide you down the rabbit hole that is Bioremediation, of which Mycoremediation is just one branch. I have included information and links below, where possible, to a range of further reading including articles, books and videos. This provides an excellent starting point whereby you can educate yourself on the frankly mind blowing subject of working with nature to better our lives - without living like a hermit in a cave ignoring the modern world. I have done my best to ensure these points of information are true and correct, but cannot completely guarantee such, and so request that you do so as well for yourselves. Additionally, the views and opinions expressed in the linked materials belong solely to their respective authors and do not necessarily reflect my own.
